VIEWING YOUR CLIPS IN THE TIMELINE

You now have two clips in your timeline.

Obviously, when working with longer projects, you’ll have many many clips in the timeline and there will be times you will want to Zoom in and Zoom out to see more or less of your entire sequence.  You can do this by using the “Zoom Control” or the “Zoom Slider” both of which are at the very bottom of the Timeline window. [these are indicated on the handout as well]

If you drag the rounded end of the “Zoom Slider” with your mouse, you can adjust the horizontal scale of the timeline.  If you use the zoom control, you can move the control to the left to magnify or to the right to reduce the size of your clips in the sequence.

So make sure you’re zoomed out enough to see both of your clips in the timeline, but not so far that the two clips look very small on the screen.   A quick and easy way to do this is with the keyboard shortcut “Shift-Z”.

TIP:  Shift-Z will make the entire timeline visible no matter how long or how short it is.

Your entire sequence should now be 18-seconds long.  Look at the top of the TIMELINE window to where you see the Timeline Ruler area that lists the timecode.  Timecode is listed in Hours:minutes:seconds:frames. The end of your second clip should be just about at the 18-second mark (give or take a couple frames)

Note: The FCP timeline starts at 01:00:00:00 (one hour, no minutes, no seconds, no frames), so the end of your 2nd clip should actually be at 01:00:18:00)

TIP: While in the Timeline window, hit the “home” button on the keyboard.   This will automatically move the Timeline’s playhead to the very beginning of the timeline.  Experiment with the arrow keys on your keyboard as well.  The right and left arrow keys will move you one frame to the right or to the left, respectively.   The up and down arrow keys will move you forward and backwards to each edit point and the “end” key will take you directly to the very last frame of the last clip in your sequence.

Press the “home” button to return the playhead to the very beginning of the Timeline.

Now go to your CANVAS window and hit the play button.  This will play your two clips back to back.
