Course description and objectives:
Language provides a tool that enables us to communicate with others. As our understanding of a language increases, our consciousness of cultural similarities and differences becomes more acute, and we begin to understand why people speak and act the way they do. Ultimately, learning a language represents our personal commitment to overcoming the barriers that separate people; learning a language is one of our most significant means of achieving peace and harmony in today's global world.
This course is designed to enable you to learn to use the French language in a logical and culturally appropriate context. It will provide you with the fundamentals for communicating in simple oral and written French. Although most of the communication will occur in the present tense, we will spend some time using the immediate future (futur proche). We will use French in contexts that reproduce authentic situations and our readings will highlight aspects of the culture of French-speaking (francophone) countries.
The text is designed to help you understand and learn vocabulary and grammatical structures through communicative strategies in an authentic cultural context. Its discovery-based approach is aimed at higher-order learning while at the same time it is adapted to elementary level skills. As your skill level increases you will advance from word-level speech to an ability to create sentences with the language. Following each step of the method carefully will help you to prepare and review systematically, building on previous learning. As this course emphasizes the active use of language, you will be expected to be actively engaged in every class and to prepare all assignments carefully before each class. All oral and written assignments, as well as tests and exams, are designed to increase your accurate and active use of French.

Attendance
Punctual arrival and regular attendance at all classes are imperative for success in this course. Coming late to 3 classes will constitute an absence. Each absence in excess of 4 will result in an automatic drop of 2% in your final grade. You will be held responsible for any work missed due to lateness or absence.
Homework
As a significant component of this course (30%) is based on your timely completion of oral and written assignments, it is in your best interest to complete these assignments promptly and carefully. On-line homework is assigned the day before it is due and is indicated by date on the ESPACES Supersite. On-line homework assignments are self-correcting, and I will record your grade for these assignments on a weekly basis. You may do an exercise more than once within the week it is assigned. Written homework in the form of themes (devoirs écrits) must be completed on the date indicated on the syllabus and will be penalized for lateness.
Tests and exams
There will be 5 unit tests, one oral exam at mid-semester, and a comprehensive final. No make-ups will be given for tests or exams except under emergency circumstances (serious documented illness, a death in the family, etc.) and only when prearranged with me.
N.B. The level of expectations in this course is high. Denison is a selective school, and you will be expected to perform accordingly. Moreover, because Denison is a liberal arts college, I will expect you to take FR 111 as seriously as courses in your major or minor. Since none of us has the same gifts, and since many of you are in this course only because it is required, that could mean that some of you may struggle more than others to do well. That is nothing to apologize for or feel anxious about. Schools like Denison are about academic growth, not necessarily academic comfort, although I will do all I can to put you at ease and make learning French an enjoyable experience.
The Modern Language Tutoring Center
The Center is a free resource available to all Modern Language students. Student tutors can help you out with drills and grammar questions, including conjugations and vocabulary; they can also go over oral and written activities from the textbook or workbook, answering questions about instructions for in-class activities, homework or workbook exercises, and going over study guides and tests. However, due to reasons of academic dishonesty, they cannot and must not correct or contribute directly to any work that will be submitted for a grade. The tutoring center is located on the 2nd floor Fellows Hall (201), and is open: Sunday-Thursday 7-9pm, Sunday 2-4pm. Free one-on-one tutoring is also available through Abby Ghering of the Academic Support and Enrichment Center.
Statements of University Policies
Disability Statement
Any student who feels that he or she may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should meet with me personally to discuss his or her specific needs. I rely on the Office of Academic Support & Enrichment Center in 104 Doane to verify the need for reasonable accommodations based on documentation on file in their office.
Academic Integrity
The students and faculty of Denison University and the Department of Modern Languages are committed to academic integrity and will not tolerate any violation of this principle. Academic honesty, the cornerstone of teaching and learning, lays the foundation for lifelong integrity.
Academic dishonesty is, in most cases, intellectual theft, whether inadvertent or intended. It includes, but is not limited to, providing or receiving assistance in a manner not authorized by the instructor in the creation of work to be submitted for evaluation. This standard applies to all work ranging from daily homework assignments to major exams and papers. Students must clearly cite any sources consulted—not only for quoted phrases but also for ideas and information that are not common knowledge. Neither ignorance nor carelessness is an acceptable defense in cases of plagiarism. It is the student’s responsibility to follow the appropriate format for citations.
As is indicated in Denison’s Student Handbook available through mydenison.edu, instructors must refer every act of academic dishonesty to the Associate Provost and violations may result in failure in the course, suspension, or expulsion. (For further information, see http://www.denison.edu/student-affairs/handbook/article7.html.)

Emploi du temps
ESPACES is divided into Unités composed of 2 lessons. We will cover 5 of these Unités this semester, with a test on each Unité. Unit Openers outline the content and features of each Unité.
Each lesson is divided into the following sections:
1.Contextes presents vocabulary that is reinforced by written and listening exercises. All listening exercises are available both on-line and on the Textbook MP3 CD-Rom included in your materials.
2.Le Roman-photo presents the story that will provide the context for our study. The Roman-photo uses the vocabulary presented in Contextes and introduces examples of the grammar points we will study in the Structure section. The Roman-Photo may be viewed on-line or on the Espaces DVD.
3.Espace Culture presents information about the culture of the French-speaking world.
4.The sections on Structures present grammar and provide drills and communicative practice through exercises in the text and on-line.
Each Unité concludes with the section Savoir-faire, which includes cultural material (Panorama) and exercises specifically designed to develop your proficiency in reading, listening, and writing. Listening exercises for Panorama are available on-line and on the Textbook MP3 CD-Rom included with your materials.
