The highlight of the 1933 season for Woody was being selected to play in the very first Major League Baseball All Star Game. The Worlds Fair was in Chicago that year and Arch Ward, then sports editor for The Chicago Tribune, figured it would be a great draw to have the National League and the America League play one game with the most prominent stars of the time. They figured it would be a one-time affair, however, it was so popular, it has continued to this day. The game was highlighted by Babe Ruth hitting a home run in the third inning driving in Charlie Gehringer who was on first base. At that point, the American League was up 3-0. The National League fought back to score 2 runs in the sixth inning but the American League added a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Woody pinch-hit in the seventh as his only time at bat and flied out. The final score was 4-2 for the American League.
