Even though Woody had his second best year in his career, many of the power hitters suffered from the change in base balls. In 1930, the National League had a total of 892 home runs led by Hack Wilson's 56 long balls. In 1931, the league total fell by 399 to 493. In Chicago, where the wind of Lake Michigan is such a big factor in hanging the ball up for a fly out, Hack Wilson totalled only 13 home runs. Woody had 202 hits, 38 doubles, 8 triples, 68 base on balls for a .319 batting average. Woody led the team with 117 runs scored. Below is the starting line-up:

The Cubs ended the season with 84 wins and 70 losses, good enough for third place in the National League 17 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals finally broke the American League streak by winning the World Series beating the Philly A's in seven games.
