President William R. Tolbert, Jr., 1971 - 1980
Following the death of Willian V.S. Tubman in 1971, William R. Tolbert, Jr. move from Vice President to President. As President of Liberia he took over when Liberia was at its finest point in history. The foreign investments in industries like rubber, iron ore, and timber were seen in many counties in Liberia. Agricultural crops like oil palm and plantein, oranges and coconut were showing promise of eventually being exported to Europe. In Tolbert inaugaration address, is stress the fact that Liberia was the most stable country in African history. Then why did Tolbert and 13 top government official die brutally in a coup while the masses cheered "we are finally free?"
