Monrovia {muhn-roh'-vee-uh} Monrovia is the capital, largest city, and chief port of Liberia, situated on Cape Montserrado on the Grain Coast of West Africa. Its population is 465,000 (1986). Industries include oil refining, food processing, and manufacturing of cement, pharmaceuticals, and paints. A deepwater harbor on Bushrod Island, developed after World War II with U.S. lend-lease assistance, is connected with the city by a bridge. The city was founded in 1821, when the AMERICAN COLONIZATION SOCIETY settled freed U.S. slaves on the site, and it was named for U.S. President James Monroe. Monrovia is the home of the University of Liberia, established in 1822. The city was badly damaged during the civil war that began in 1989. Ronald D.
