Assignments
- By the end of the week of January 13, students should have chosen a project and a team and should have read Chapters 1, 2, and 5.
- By the end of the week of January 20, students should have read Chapters 3 and 6, and should have prepared a team plan. Two case study examples can be found at http://www.mhhe.ecom/pressman.
- By January 31, students should have read Chapters 4 and 7.
- For February 6, each team should have a preliminary design to present as a progress report, based on Chapters 13 and 14. The case studies show examples of design documents. We can use Olin 219 for teams who wish to use the equipment for their presentation.
- For February 13, each team should have refined the design document and should have prepared a schedule. Students should also be reading Chapters 20 – 22.
- The next progress reports will be presented on February 21. At this time most teams will be reporting that a milestone has been completed. Comments about configuration management and quality assurance will be in order. You should have read chapters 8 and 9.
- Our first 50 minute test will take place on February 20. Some suggested review questions will be posted. Part of the test will be short answer questions to be completed in class and part will be application of concepts to be completed as a take-home. The chapters covered on the test will be those we have used for our progress reports so far: 1 – 7, 13,14, 21, 22.
- For the progress report due on February 27, each team should give a demo of their first deliverable.
- During the weeks of February 24 and March 3, students should read Chapters 17, 18, and 23 about testing. For the progress report on March 6, each team should have a test plan. Check the webpage cited in assignment 2 for an example.
- By March 20, each team should be ready with a second milestone.
- By March 24, each student should have chosen a special reading as described below and should have chosen a date for presenting material from the chosen article. As an alternative to reading an article, it is also acceptable to choose a CASE tool to learn and then do a demo as your presentation. Some case tools are suggested on the webpage listed in assignment 2. Students may work in pairs if they prefer to. As soon as possible before the presentation, at least 3 days in advance, presenters should tell the rest of the class what article or CASE tool they plan to talk about and where students can get a copy so that they can read the article or have a look at the CASE tool before the presentation. This will facilitate good discussion of the ideas to be presented.
- For the progress reports on March 27, most groups will have a milestone to demo. Equipment is available for use if needed.
- March 20 is a work day. Groups should meet and carry out whatever activities will best help them prepare for their next milestone.
- On both March 19 and 21, the class topic is “CASE tools.” Students should read Chapter 31 as the accompanying material.
- On March 21 (if time permits), 26 and 28, we will look at system engineering (Ch. 10).
- During the last week of March and the first week of April, we will look at some metrics (Chapters 19 and 24).
- The next test will be during the week of April 7.
Special Reading: At the end of every chapter in the textbook there are several important articles listed with the necessary information to locate the articles. Every student should select one of these articles to read so that a summary of the article can be presented in class. Be sure to check that no one else has selected the same article. Presentations will begin during the week of February 24 and continue during the remainder of the semester up to the week of April 14. Choose a topic you have a special interest in, select an article, read it, and prepare a summary of the article. When you present the summary, also tell how the ideas in the article apply to your current project.
