Brian V. Hortz |
Dr. Brian Vincent Hortz, Denison '94, is now in his twelfth year as the Head Athletic Trainer and Associate Professor and fourteenth year as an athletic trainer at Denison University. Dr. Hortz's interest in exercise science and health began when he was an undergraduate at Denison from 1990 to 1994. Dr. Hortz graduated in 1994 with a B.A. in physical education with a concentration in sportsmedicine. Upon graduation form DU, Dr. Hortz pursued a master's degree in sportsmedicine from Ohio University graduating in 1995. Hortz then continued his post-graduate studies at The Ohio State University where he completed his doctoral degree in exercise science with an emphasis in health education.
Brian's Research Interests
I am interested in physical activity promotion through the use of health education methods. My current area of research is in adolescent physical activity promotion. Prevention of obesity has risen to the top of the list of public health priorities. The proportion of adolescents and adults who are obese has already reached alarming levels. The burden of obesity on the population has
exceeded the capacity of the health care delivery system to deliver treatment for obesity or its associated morbid conditions. This burden has lead to the development of research to increase physical activity. I develop, test, and evaluate social cognitive thoery based interventions targeting physical activity in the adolescent population in the hopes of midigating the effects of obesity on the population. In addition, I enjoy studying the effectiveness of other varied health education programs, testing of behavioral theories of health behavior, and designing and evaluating health promotion interventions for other behaviors outside of the obesity prevention area.
