Physics 306, Advanced Electricity and Magnetism
Advice regarding the exams

Although it is our goal that you should learn the concepts of the course, we must have some way to evaluate you. Therefore, we have to give exams. (Yuck).

Information regarding Exam #1

Exams: General
Exams: Number and location
Exams: Make-up exams
Exams: As relates to your grade
Exams: Format
Exams: Formulae that you need

Exams: General

The exams in this course are meant to give the instructors some idea of how well you understand the concepts presented. Therefore, problems will concentrate on physics rather than difficult math (that is, they will be "physics-hard" and "math-doable").

Exams: Number and location

There will be four, take home exams given in the course. For specific dates see the course schedule.

Exams: Make-up exams

Since these will be take-home exams, worked over a number of days, we can say (that with the exception of excused medical absences),
THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS! ANY EXAM WHICH YOU MISS WILL BE GRADED AS A ZERO.

Exams: As relates to your grade

The four exams will count for 44% of your total course grade.

Exams: Format

The exams will each have both a take-home and in-class component. The take home parts will be distributed at the end of class on Wednesdays or Thursdays, and returned at the beginning of class the following Monday. The in-class parts will normally be given before the take-home parts to help you achieve maximum performance.
The exact problem format of the exams will vary; however we can say that the exams will tend to emphasize concepts and reasonable math.

Exams: Formulae that you need

The key to physics is not memorization, but being able to utilize information. Therefore, we do *not* expect you to memorize long and ugly formulae. You may use your book and notes. NO OTHER MATERIAL OR INDIVIDUAL HELP/DISCUSSION WILL BE ALLOWED.
