Physics 121 -- Introduction to General Physics I
Advice regarding the on-line exercises
General
Physics is not necessarily and easy course. It is even harder if
you fall behind in the material. That is why there are suggested
homework problems for you to do. (Please note that solutions are available.)
In order to help you learn the material, and to help you gauge
you progress as the term progresses, this course requires
on-line exercises of you.
These exercises will contain both multiple choice, and numerical
problems. In order that you be able to use these exercises to
help you learn (instead of just generating another grade), there
are two important things you should remember:
- The exercises each week are based on the homework material that
you should be doing that week. This should help you keep
pace with the course, and gauge your understanding.
- The exercises can be taken as often as you would like
between the time they are posted, and the due date. Only
your last result will be recorded.
Procedure for taking the exercises
- Enter the home page for this class, and go to the exercise section (either via the buttons, or through the text link).
- Enter your first 5-digit identification number (given to you in class)
as your ID, and the second 5-digit identification number (given to you
in class) as your password.
- Click on the "Begin" button.
- Take the exercise.
- Click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page. This will
submit the results and grade the exercise.
- Click on the "done" link after seeing your score. This will return you
to the exercise page.
Materials allowed during exercises
You may use any matrials you wish while taking the exercises (books,
calculators, etc).
You may not receive help during the exercise.
Suggestions for how to use the exercises to help you learn
Below are some suggestions regarding the use of this exercise set-up.
- Since the exercises are based on homework, do the homework first! Then
check the solutions with the answers in the physics library, to make
sure you understand the concepts/procedures.
- Take the exercise the first time with only a calcuator. This will give
you an idea of how much you understand.
- If there are any problems you don't understand, look them up with the
homework, and figure them out.
- Take the exercise a second time, again with only a calculator, pen/pencil,
and paper.
- If you don't do as well as you would like, take the exercise a third time,
and take notes on what you do and don't understand. Use your book this
time to help you further. Then, get help on the material from
a classmate, a tutor, or your instructor.
- Once you understand the material, take the exercise a final time to
get yourself a good grade.
