Astronomy 100
Advice regarding the exams

Although it is our goal that you should learn the concepts of the course, we must have some way to evaluate you. Therefore, we have to give exams. (Yuck).

Information regarding Exam #1

Exams: General
Exams: Number and location
Exams: Make-up exams
Exams: As relates to your grade
Exams: Format
Exams: Formulae that you need

Exams: General

The exams in this course are meant to give the instructors some idea of how well you understand the concepts presented. Therefore, problems will concentrate on physics rather than difficult math (that is, they will be "astronomy-hard" and "math-easy").

Exams: Number and location

There will be four, regular, class-long exams given in the course. For specific dates see the course schedule.

Exams: Make-up exams

Since the worst of your four, regular, class-long exams will not be counted toward your course grade (see below), we can say (that with the exception of excused medical absences),
THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS! ANY EXAM WHICH YOU MISS WILL BE GRADED AS A ZERO.

Exams: As relates to your grade

The four, regular, class-long exams given during the conference sections will count for 39% of your total course grade.
only your best three of the four, regular, class-long exams will be counted toward the exam portion of your course grade
.

Exams: Format

The exams will each be 50 minutes long.
The exact problem format of the exams will vary; however we can say that the exams will tend to emphasize concepts and simple math rather than longer involved problems.

Exams: Formulae that you need

The key to physics is not memorization, but being able to utilize information. Therefore, we do *not* expect you to memorize long and ugly formulae. Consequently, in this section you will be allowed to bring in a single, hand-written, 8.5 x 11'' sheet of paper, containing any information that you feel is pertinent. NO OTHER INFORMATION, OR REFERENCE MATERIAL MAY BE BROUGHT INTO THE EXAM.
