Catalog Description
In this course, you will study the principles of modern operating
systems, which essentially manage a collection of concurrent processes.
Thinking about concurrency is fundamentally different than thinking about
the relatively simple serial processes that you will have considered up to
this point. Therefore, we spend quite a bit of time initially studying
synchronization primitives and their application to specific problems. Then
the remainder of the course is centered around a large project in which
students actually write significant portions of a working operating system.
Through this project and the accompanying classroom material, you will study
process synchronization and scheduling, resource management, memory
management and virtual memory, and file systems.
