Accessing Novell Network Storage

First log in to the Macintosh workstation as instructed in Login HOWTO.

File system Desktop Icons

Upon successful login, on the right side of the desktop display are a set of icons associated with file system entries.  By default, these include five entries:

The top two icons represent two hard disk partitions present locally on all of the computers in the lab.  The first hard disk partition (Olin217) holds the operating system and all applications.  The second hard disk partition is used for local folders and files used in customizing the environment for the set of users that log in to this machine.

The third and fourth icons are alias shortcuts to network drives available across campus.  The first alias links to an individual’s U drive, and the second alias links to the S drive associated with an individual.

The final icon is an alias shortcut to file system storage available to the user.  Please note:  this local folder is just that … local to this computer and thus is not available at any other workstation.  In addition to general storage, this area is used to store individual preferences for the user.  Further, this storage is not backed up and there may exist situations in which files may not remain available indefinitely.  Therefore, you are will advised to follow the steps detailed in the Novell HOWTO for storing all files that you want to keep.  Use this area only for temporary storage.

To Access your Novell U drive:

On the Macintosh computers, we will use the terms ‘Personal Workspace’ and ‘U drive’ as synonyms.  They both refer to the same network storage facility maintained by Denison Computing Services.  You can access your Novell U drive through the ‘Student Personal Workspace (U drive)’ alias shortcut on the desktop after Macintosh login.

  1. Simply double-click the alias icon on the desktop and a Novell login dialog box will appear:

  1. Enter your Novell username and password in the ‘Name:’ and ‘Password:’ fields of the login dialog
  2. Press the return key on the keyboard or use the mouse to click the ‘Connect’ button in the login dialog

Upon correct name/password combination, the Connect operation will mount the network drive on your workstation.  This will result in a ‘Personal Workspace’ icon on the desktop and a new open file system navigation window looking similar to the following:

This view is one level “higher” than you might be used to in accessing your U drive from PC compatible computers.  If you double click on the folder named with your login name (‘Bressoud’ in this example), you should see all the files and folders from your U drive.  All normal access rights should be in place for you to read and write folders and files on your U drive.

Your U drive is backed up.  All files that you want to keep should be organized and stored on this network storage facility.

To Access your Novell S drive:

Your professors/instructors may use the Novell S drive both for sharing files with you and as a repository through which you may submit homework assignments.  On the Macintosh computers, we will use the terms ‘Shared Workspaces’ and ‘S drive’ as synonyms.  They both refer to the same network storage facility maintained by Denison Computing Services.  You can access your Novell S drive through the ‘Shared Workspaces (S drive)’ alias shortcut on the desktop after Macintosh login.

  1. Simply double-click the ‘Shared Workspaces (S drive)’ alias icon on the desktop and a Novell login dialog box will appear:

This will result in a ‘Shared Workspaces’ icon on the desktop and a new open file system navigation window.
