This month was notable for the R for two reasons:
 
We launched two consultants efforts.  The first is a peer-to-peer student tutoring service.  this is a pilot project.  I trained four Communication honors students to consult, focusing primarily on helping students with speech anxiety.  This just got off the ground, so we’ll see how it works.  I’ve also established a consultancy bureau for faculty, utilizing comm professors with expertise in the various R areas of group communication, public

I thought I’d use the October newsletter to update everyone on how plans for the R initiative are proceeding this year.
 
The long term goal for the work I’m helping as the interim R coordinator is to get a regular and healthy offering of divisional R courses across as many departments as possible, and to support faculty who step forward to teach these courses in any way they need.  We want to foster a culture of appreciation for oral competence as a fundamental aspect of a liberal education.

This month I inaugurate a monthly newsletter to keep everyone informed of what’s going on with the “R” initiative.  I’ll have the newsletter come out at the beginning of each month.  
 
We completed the first month of the new initiative with two faculty orientation workshops.  The participants were:
